Gilgo Beach Mural Completed
Another successful day at Gilgo Beach and 5 more murals are completed covering the entire length of the East wall in the underpass leading to the beach.
Here's the comp I painted in photoshop of my idea for this wall mural.

Here's a picture of the completed mural by Kevin Corcoran and I.

Below is the image that Daisy Dudley made using my digital camera on a 30 second exposure and drawing with a pen light. *Note that she had to stand behind where these letter were written and write them backwards. I'd say she nailed it…….

If you want to see the pics from the day and a time lapse sequence of the this wall mural you can find it here > Gilgo Beach Mural Project

Another beautiful mural… really fantastic work.
Send me the pics!
why are there 10 skulls painted on this wall and what is their significance?
Thanks for inquiring about this Amanda,
I'd like to tell you that there was a reason to have 10 skulls in this painting but that's just the way it worked out. As far as why there are skulls in this painting, that's up for debate. Not sure if you've seen this painting in real life or just here on the blog but there are 3 mermaids swimming down to a sunken pirate ship at the bottom of the ocean. You can maybe make out the ship on the ocean floor in this pic. Not too sure. You can definitely see it in the computer sketch that I did for this wall mural. I have a story in my head of why there are skulls there and why there may be 10 of them but I wonder what you think. Instead of disclosing my thoughts about it I ask you and anyone else that see's this to tell me the story you think is happening here. Leave your interpretation in the comments please. I look forward to hearing about it…
I absolutely saw this in person and it gave me the creeps considering what has been unfolding along the ocean parkway. I think it's an absolute weird coincidence that you painted 10 skulls and 10 bodies have been discovered! I came to this website to see when you painted that wall. I was convinced that some sicko painted those skulls onto your mural after the news. I see now that you painted it a few years ago. It's still a weird coincidence. 10 skulls – just weird. Maybe you're psychic… or maybe I don't even want to know…
Amanda,
It's unfortunate that my mural stirred that type of reaction in you. I can't say that I ever wanted that type of impression to be made on anyone when I painted it. It was more of a mythological type mural where the mysterious pirate ship sinks and 3 mermaids that watch over those parts of the ocean go to investigate. It was informally called "The Rescue". I'd like to give you a different thought process about the murals that were done in that tunnel. I have 4 murals in there and I also painted the entire West Gilgo tunnel as well. We (all artist's involved in this project) volunteered our time for 5 years in a row to come together and paint anything we wanted as long as it had some earth/ocean theme to it. The goal was to clean up the dreary tunnel and promote conservation, clean oceans, and clean beaches. During the days we painted there was a surf contest each year and money was raised that went to save multiple children's lives that live in 3rd world countries with a curable heart disease. I hope that next time you visit this tunnel you'll see that through our efforts we saved lives. What's transpired on Ocean parkway recently is tragic and I understand how we're all being effected by that but please don't make any connections between the positive project that we did, by offering our artistic services for free and helping to brighten a community, with the tragic loss of life that happened down there. It's unfair to all the artist's that participated in that mural project to inject any type of negativity towards that tunnel.
Thanks for reaching out. Hopefully that makes you feel better about the mural.
