A friend of mine asked me why I draw with a ballpoint pen the other day. When I first began learning to draw the figure I chose to work with pen initially so I couldn't erase. The thought process of having to accept and work with the marks that you put on a page still intrigues me to this day. It generally forces me to be braver when I draw and that always helps create more dynamic drawings, mistakes, and nuances that identify me as an individual. I like to see the struggle of the artist on the page and using a pen or any other permanent tool to make marks with encourages that. Here's some images drawn with a Ballpoint pen.

This is a drawing of Craig who regularly attends the Draw Humans sessions at Theceeflat.

Here's a few drawings of Gestural poses. These were about 2 minute poses

I know it sounds corny saying that cows are friendly but that's what I experienced in Scotland when I met some cows grazing in a pasture along the road. They are such beautiful and gentle creatures that are very aware of the things around them especially humans. They remind me a lot of dogs. I was shocked at how moved I was by these wonderful animals. i wanted to visit them everyday I was there in Scotland and was happy when I finally got a good 2 hours to go out and draw them. Here's the results along with some pics and a video of these amazing animals.

My intention here was to create a digital painting from my mind and record the process with a screen capture program to show you the entire progression of the piece but the screen capture crashed right before I was done. So this one has no video to accompany it but I intend to do this now quite often so stay tuned to see some process paintings. For now all I have is the image of the final version of this. My goal for most of these will be to create mood and scale. I really love things that have massive scale and I think this one captures that thought process. Comments are always welcome and thanks for checking this image out.

There's something about this image that I really like. It's most likely the graphic quality of it. Structurally I think it has strength as well which I'm happy with. I believe the gesture of the pose and the shape the figure makes also feel good to me. It's images like this that keep me studying. There might have been a hand full of images before this that I didn't like but then when you least expect it you hit on something you've been thinking about and striving for. It's like being reborn into the excitement of learning and making new discoveries which is always a great place to be…

Using the Sketchpad on my blog I created this.

I was explaining to a friend the use of contrast or lack thereof to depict distance in a landscape image so today I decided to draw this image and play with the concepts myself. There is also the theory of warm colors vs cool colors in being able to show distance…Distance is shown here by creating less detail in the distance or (background) of this image. The colors used in the background are also cooler colors as compared to the middle ground (really warm and colorful stuff). Then the foreground is established by using lots of detail and the darkest color (black). Usually only the foreground will have high contrast or the use of black/ darker colors in relation to really light colors. These are all things that can be observed naturally outdoors. I am using the concepts and creating my own colors/ arrangement of colors to illustrate this. It's a game of sorts. Take a concept and try it out. That's what I've done here….
